Lawyers (sorry to our legal friends out there) and not the Engineers had the ultimate word on the ECU characteristics of my former C32 AMG which almost killed me at least once/day when it would cut off most engine power due to 'slightest' wheel spin making you a standing target for rear approaching traffic!! After several letters and many meetings with MB Reps I finally gave up on the car...too bad, it had one of the best overall engines I've ever experienced. I became accustomed to not making right turns from a red light (we can in TO) as a quick right turn from a standing stop 'might' put you in LIMP MODE... you essentially were "engine and electronically braked" until the ECU (from a regular C230 -seriously, I was "told" this by more than one technician!-) decided the proper balance of grip/power was restored and then would allow forward movement! Try that on an inclined salty/sandy road.

As absurd as my list seems above, and while you read it as if I wrote it sarcastically, some places in the modern world have banned certain foods and drinks, or taxed them into oblivion, and activities have been banned in schools or national parks because of danger and costs.
I used to teach some physics principles through Model rocketry. I had the kids build rockets from scratch. They had to determine C.P. and CG positions and display application of basic aerodynamic principles. Ended up canning it due to insurance costs and ‘potential’ danger as deemed by my ‘superiors’ even though each rocket would be thoroughly checked by me during the build and in pre-flight. Of the experiences those kids had in school and the hours in front of books or a computer screen, what do you think those kids remembered most? Not any more. Another reason to retire. Not one incident in all the years I ran the activity.

Data suggest that retiring should be outlawed. The most deaths occur in the retired population. DANGEROUS!

The only answer, @Alfanut , is for the government to keep you working!

Agreed.

Speed does not kill.
Stopping in an unexpected manner from speed is what kills.

And people who are not competent to control a car at speed (and the less common, are responsible for a vehicle not capable of managing above a certain speed) are the danger, not the magnitude of the readout on the dial in front of the driver.

But until drivers and pedestrians get their heads out of their posteriors and start paying 100% attention to what they are doing, we're all at the mercy of those data points Philster spoke of.

I'll probably regret saying this, but too many of those data points represent "thinning the herd" - people who unfortunately didn't learn before it was too late. The rest were statistics because someone else wasn't doing what they should have been (driving instead of sleeping, texting, talking, showing off). For the latter group, I am truly sorry. But limiting my speed, or otherwise automating my drive will not help. I tend to drive while driving. Besides, one can still quite nicely kill a pedestrian, or another, driver while going well under the speed limit.

I know, I know - responsibility for one's own actions. What am I thinking???

Control the driver, not the vehicle!!!

Guys. Go buy some vagisil and apply it to your itchy vaginas. There's no need to get your panties in a bunch over this news article.
I agree, the speed limiter thing is ridiculous but if you read the article carefully, it also states it can be entirely disabled. No big deal. Alot of cars already have them anyways, some of you probably own such cars. Just disable it and voilà! You can speed at your hearts content.

When they ban the kill switch, then we can revolt.
Or just have someone like Jamie program it out of the ECU.

You are correct in that some cars already have them (BMW & MB had a 'gentleman's agreement' to limit vehicles to 155mph) however that was between two agreeing parties (Porsche never joined ;-) Heheee

It is the slippery slope of enduring death by a thousand cuts that "personally" bothers me. I tend to look at things (maybe incorrectly) in a more holistic/pragmatic sense. When I see some of our southern brothers and sisters defending the right to bear arms, I interpret that as the right for someone to defend themselves, their family and property. I may not necessarily want everyone running around with a gun but agree that everyone has a right to defend themselves reasonably. What is next, the government telling me how sharp my knives can be?

As much as I detest government intervention (Yes and I am Canadian LOL) I would rather see "graduated license" where one has to ensure they are 'capable' of driving said vehicle (no different than a Truckers License or Hunting/Gun License etc) as I do sincerely believe driving a high powered vehicle is vastly different than driving one that is not. BTW, an issue we have here along our main highway are drivers that do not understand PASS on LEFT, LANE PRIORITY and DRIVE in DRIVING LANE (right lame) lol, hence my "Education" emphasis before.

All Good

Vagisil won't make it easy (nee possible) for many Europeans to own cars over 1.8 liters, nor reduce crushing penalties and taxes on performance cars, nor create insurance standards that don't make performance cars prohibitively expensive, nor will it spur Ferrari to produce screaming, naturally aspirated V8s and V12s again. And Vagisil won't bring back the scream of F1 cars -- one of the most soul-lifting sounds I've ever experienced.

Do Volvo Polestar specials get limited to 112 mph?

Vagisil won't help bring back many activities to many schools and it won't stop the inevitable creep towards global overlords trying to control everything.

Nobody is exaggerating. Certainly a wise lawmaker creates a policy so outrageous (pacing and leading) that the law settles into something less and people feel like disaster was avoided (disabling systems).

The Vagisil quote is cute, but I think maybe it provides some solstice from the reality that ICE cars are going away and more fun is being sucked out of what seems like everything. Nobody is imagining this, and Vagisil comments are meant to shut down a conversation between people who appear very bright and who are drawing from experience.

Have Europeans Lost Their Minds?

These car limiters are happening because of idiots like the guy here yesterday who took the police on a 1 hour chase speeds up to 128 mph in his truck. I’m not sure what difference 112 mph limit would make a difference when you keep driving on only rims. It took a pit maneuver to end the chase. Here’s a still shot from an amazing video

I just discovered this in another article -

"Drivers can override the software: pushing hard on the accelerator will bypass the feature and means drivers still have the option to ignore the speed limit. "

?????
