Lightbulb Streaming Live View Rear Camera

Now given the Coupe has literally nil visibility through the rear view mirror I've been looking for the solution of a reversing camera but operates a live stream all the time not just when reverse is selected.

Ideally something that isn't an 'extra' internal screen so my thoughts are replacing the rear view mirror given its practically redundant. Finallye searching I've come across this reasonably priced option - the Auto-Vox X1:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...LKUQATN6&psc=1

Has anyone got any experience of these types of cameras as it seems to solve all issues - forward dash cam, reversing camera, rear view vision camera?

Whilst I think it shouldn't be too difficult to set up the only issue I can see is how to get the feed from the rear camera to the back of the mirror. Does anyone know if there is a place to feed the wire from the engine bay to the dash ideally via the cabin headlining?

Another option would be to use an RF signal kit to transmit the video signal to a receiving RF unit attached to the mirror. In which case I'd need a switched positive feed in the engine bay - where from? But this could cause signal lag.

Depending on the size/design of the camera I'm wondering if it could be mounted on the grille and the very top of the rear hatch near the roof line? I'd accept for reverse parking that positon is not ideal but rear vision is what I'm looking for and mounting it low down below the registration may compromise long distance rear vision.

Any thoughts?

Seems a bit of a faff, tbh.

Can you not just reverse it off the beepers? When it beeps loud, and the reversing lines go red, stab the brake.

If you don't mind mounting the camera above the engine, this one might work: https://www.voxxelectronics.com/gent...u=ADVGENFDMHL1

I'm OK on using the PDC to reverse into spaces etc, it's more having a good extended view to the rear. The last time I used door mirrors only to reverse and see what was behind me was when I drove a works Ford Transit in the early 90s.

I can'se see if too difficult to hook up, the only drama will be how best to feed the AV camera lead from the engine bay to behincd the dash.

Here is my install.

Having the rear camera on all of the time on the rear view mirror is very distracting. Your focal point to look rearward vs the camera is very different and requires purposeful effort to focus so I don’t recommend it. I have installed a switch to allow the camera to remain on so I say that with experience.

The mirror I have also has a dash cam built in. Neat install.

Let us know how you go.

I’m doing this now, well the camera part. I went with the Joying 8.8” radio a while back which gives me the screen and a button to turn on the video manually on demand at any time and supports going to the camera as soon as it goes into Reverse. I’m still sorting out the route I’m going to use for the connection as I don’t want to do any permanent modifications to the car. Leaning towards a wireless transmitter/receiver setup to go between a license plate mounted camera and the head unit.

I wouldn’t recommend one of those mirrors as they are even bigger than the already too big stocker and will block even more of your view.

I disagree with this comment. Although I did not necessarily want to replace the mirror, the slight increase in width actually improves rearward vision as with a glance you can now see beyond the glass area and through the side mesh panels which enhances blind spot vision. The mirror uses the same windshield mount (Fiat style). With the old mirror I found myself shifting my head left or right.

All of my wiring is reversible and it was easy to do once I figured it out. It’s all outlined in my thread. No mods to the car.

I had a wireless setup and tossed it because i found it fiddly switching the WiFi over to the screen when in a rush to reverse the car into a parking spot which is often done with time pressure. Having the image come up automatically without driver input reduces the stress of driving this car, which I find demands my full attention. I often flick the side mirror down to avoid curb damage, so having a 1 step parking procedure instead of 2 suits me fine.

Having a constant rearward feed is best achieved on a separate screen of thats what you want for sure. The mirror split screen is not recommended in my opinion. On the Joying screen though, I’d suspect you’d want other information displayed at times such as Nav and entertainment, so there would be some switching involved unless it is automatically triggered by the reverse signal via the camera lead input.

Interested to hear about this from you JWA seeing you have the system installed.

I meant visibility looking forward, through turns and traffic coming from your right.

Err, left in your case.

Crutchfield is selling it for US$799 but I agree it is too expensive.

If you are not thinking about getting a head unit with video input, maybe the Garmin GPS + their BC 30 wireless backup camera (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/501486) would work. I have been thinking about this setup to replace the rear view mirror, but haven't figured a good way to mount the GPS unit yet.
