The biggest problem is that today's greatest driver is the greatest driver because his style happens to get these tires into a certain and very narrow operating temp window. Kimi struggles at Ferrari are an example of a natural driver, who prefers oversteer and rotation (um, ya know, RACING cars) but found himself in an era where tires are designed to be finicky and an engineer's problem, with cars that don't thrive with his driving style and with aero that destroys tires such that you're better off 100 yards back than you are pressing into someone's gearbox.

All of it can be traced back to a spur-of-the-moment idea Bernie Ecclestone had after a race in 2010 or 2011 that saw all sorts of chaos and pit stops for tires and around tire strategy. He woke up the next day and decided the next tire supplier contract would require the supplier (a lone supplier) would have to supply tires with which some sort of temp and compound strategy that would force chaos (as he saw it to be entertainment).

Like so many well-intentioned things, it had the opposite effect and results in less close racing. Requires more knowledge (big team manpower and engineering) to solve for and makes being a god driver a crap shoot: Hey, I wonder if I can make a RedBull go fast, because I can drive the snot out of everything I touch. Oops. I'm a loser. The way I drive, like a racer, doesn't heat up the tires into the almost nondescript window.

Yay. Now, let's talk about 'lift and coast' strategy... which all teams must do to finish a race and charge up their ERS, because the return on investment for lifting and coasting (battery recharge) can be deployed two turns later when you need some low-end ERS kick.

Yay again.

F1 is really, really the best because of the engineering, except they are forbidding real engineering and creativity and replacing it with engineers trying to solve for the moronic issues above.

And sadly, that means those with the most money, will win.
There are teams who do remarkably well on a limited budget, as you posted a few pages back. But they aren't going to put down consistently exceptional performances.

In the end, sadly, it isn't really about racing anymore. Yes, Engineering is a bigger part of the championships every year / rule change. 2021 will be worse again, although maybe simpler (doubt it, though).
In the end however, it's all about ratings, advertising revenue, and franchise value. Skill takes a back seat to entertainment value.

Hopefully, in 10 years, it hasn't become the automotive equivalent of WWE!

There is always MotoGP if F1 hits the toilet

It's only 25 laps, but man those guys can ride. The skill in that sport has risen to match the technology. They used to only need knee pucks for gauging the angle of the bike in a turn. Now the riders drag a knee and elbow because the traction is so damn good.
What's even more fun to watch is them race in the rain.

This weekend is double fun for me as MotoGP is in Austin TX. Turn 1 with Motorcycles is insanity.
I highly recommend people watch the race.

Always enjoyed MotoGP, but they need to b careful. See them becoming like F1, by killing organic engineering by banning anything creative (esp. aero) and forcing teams to engineer themselves around rules only. Some of the same tire nonsense crops up too.

Back to F1:

Ferrari back to basics with engine/MGU-H and Merc on pace to win race in similar fashion as Melbourne. The Ham-Bot Grand Prix is soon here.

Ferrari has some nice trickery (legal) they can't run because they can't cool it. Oh joy.

Those were some quick laps. Bottas is nailing it.
Interesting Line up. First 5 rows are team mates. The start of the race is going to be chaotic.

Variables for the race
*********************
This track eats tires. Pit Strategy will be super important
Ferrari is faster on the straights
MB is faster in the turns
DRS
Turn 1. I envision some carnage on the first lap.

MB needs to get a good first 2 laps and cover Ferrari by 1 second to eliminate DRS. If that happens, they should be able to control the race from the start and just grow the gap.

Verstappen may be able to split the Ferrari's. He kind of got hosed in Q3 by more optimistic drivers grabbing track position.
Gasley finally looked like he has a handle on his car.

As such, there is going to be some very aggressive driving early on.

Haas was comfortable where they sit and protected their options. Look out for them to finish at least one car 5th or 6th.
I don't see Renault placing as good as they qualified.

Alfa did not look good.

Fun Fact:

Second time in F1 history, the top ten cars on the grid are arranged team-by-team:

2 Mercedes
2 Ferraris
2 Red Bull
2 Renault
2 Haas

Lack of sleep because of the timing of the race where I live: Yawn

My take on the race: Yawn

Fastest Lap was grabbed by Gasly. With no positional loss from a late pit stop, they slapped on soft rubber and he posted the fastest lap. Rest of field had worn mediums and hards. Good call by RBR.***

The Italian press, and others, will be talking about orders for LeClerc to let Seb by. LEC balked at this notion, knowing full well it would cost them time and that Merc was untouchable. LEC felt he was just managing his car/tires, and not falling back to Seb inasmuch as he was just cruising along.

Kimi looked calm and steady in the AR. He is definitely grinding out 1-2 positions more than the car should offer. I guess others don't realize that there is a whole race to gain a few positions, and they wind up with names like Torpedo (Kvyat).

The whole Merc thing is terrible for the sport. And I need a way to stay tuned in without the British press. They are insufferable and report on just the highest-level stuff. They lack details. They are talking to the most informed F1 people on the planet, but you get nothing from them.

Thank god for Nico Rosberg. Hope he maintains his independent approach.

Oh well, just venting over coffee.

*** Herein lies an opportunity for F1. You can propel the sixth best car to best of class on the rubber alone. And it'd probably work as far down as the 7th or 8th best car on most circuits. Some teams have budgets pushing 1/2 billion U.S. dollars, and fresh rubber eliminates about 250,000,000 USD in engineering the last .3 to .5 secs per lap. That's insanity.

It's like I had watched the race before it occurred aside from getting Haas wrong. Not sure what happened there.

Team Hermaphrodite [email protected] itself again.
They just lost the driver and contractor championships.
I don't need to say anything I have not already said. It was nice hearing the commentators actually ask.
"Why can't Ferrari let their drivers determine their own location on the track?"

Definition of Stupidity and Insanity
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
Kudos to LeClerc for not being baited by the reporter and keeping his cool. Without actually saying it, he implied, They screwed me.

Say what you will about Hamilton, but IMHO he is the best driver at the moment on the best team. He had a rough weekend, and was behind on pace, but once again, when it counted, he stepped up and then controlled the race. Bottas lost the race about 20' in. He spun on the start line and then it was all Hamilton. He broke the DRS range and then put down smooth lap after smooth lap. On top of that MB made one hell of a double pit stop.

Kimi had another solid race, and he just looks relaxed. Every point he gets is a win at this point and he has zero pressure.
Albon made one heck of a come back and that lap by Gasley was impressive.

The front of the race was a little boring, but there was some good action and excellent side by side driving mid pack. Vettel defending against Verstappen was solid.

In China, Ferrari was best of the rest. There is only one top team now
