Has anyone come up with a way to attach a luggage rack or similar to the rear deck on a Spider? I'm looking to do a tour of Italy with my wife who will no doubt be taking everything incl the kitchen sink!!
We need to be able to carry a small'ish suit case. If we can't make the idea work I'm going to consider buying another sports car with better luggage capacity as we want to a lot more road trips.

No need for a luggage rack or trailer- It might require some training if your wife is used to a big suitcase, as mentioned above soft luggage/bags work best to maximize cube. My wife got used to small trunks and it became a non-issue even with both the Elises, we don't check bags for week long trips anymore either.....but it was a process :)

There was someone who put a rack on top of the boot of his coupe for a trip.
IIRC, he is also someone who complained later on about cracks in the rear quarter panels on either side of the boot lid.
Not knowing, I cannot say if the two were related (or maybe I'm thinking of two different users - this was at least 3 years ago), but I would not trust the SMC to support the weight of a suitcase with impunity. Plus, you have to strap it down (= force).

If you cannot pack to the space inside of the car, then it isn't the car for your road trips. Sorry to have to say it. There are some excellent ideas in this thread, however, which I hope will help.

If you need an ALFA 2 seater and can live with an older car....the older ALFA spiders (pre 4C) had plenty of usable space. There was decent space behind the seats and the trunks were plenty large. I had a 69-70 ALFA round tail duetto. My wife and I made several extended trips with that car. The car was light also....below 2000#s. Of course it wasn't "modern" or high tech like the 4C but was a very good car. To show how large it was.....I used to put my 10 speed race bike in the trunk with the wheels removed and placed them behind the seats. Still had room for a small duffel bag too. While both the older spiders and the GTV are getting pricey they are still cheaper than a new 4C. That being said....if you can't get enough stuff in your 4C you need to refine your packing skills. My wife has the same issue....likes to take everything except the kitchen sink.....but we just set limits and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Some people also UPS or FedEx their luggage to where they are staying.

As I posted before, I use the space at the front of the engine bay for my emergency tool box. Hottest it got there on a three hour run was 156 degrees Fahrenheit. Not something I like to grab and hold but certainly cooler than the black inside of my Mercedes SL500 on a 100 degree day parked at work for 9 hours in the sun. (for the record, it pegged my 165 degree thermometer)

We also found s tent bag at a local sporting good store which fits perfectly in the passenger footwell up behind the dash. I'm still working on securing it so it doesn't slide across over the pedals.

Hello all! Noob here just getting to grips with the joys of 4C spider ownership! What a little joy the car is proving!

Anyway, having read though this and appreciating the "less is more" mantra of owners packing prowess - read managing Mrs packing requirements, has anyone had any experience with boot-bags and their spiders?

I am fully prepared for the abuse of even suggesting it, but needs must. (I need this car and I must have more cr*p carted with me to the coast/continent)

These look a reasonable solution for trips where a little more space is need and *shouldn't put too much undue wear and tear on the paint? Any and all advice, opinions and alternate suggestions welcomed!

Cheers

Learn to travel light....A bit rich coming from me if you’d seen what I lugged to Fridays’ track day (and didn’t use). As an old school motorcyclist, I can’t help but laugh at what some carry (even tow) on their bikes these days, but only taking along what is really necessary is the trick. There’s plenty of space behind the seats to hang some dressy clothes if you feel the need. Just remember, she ain’t no camper van, so don’t expect her to be.
