How to distinguish fuel injection noise or tapping/rattle noise?

Hey folks,

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been reading through RICO4C’s posts about the tapping/rattling noise, and I also dug into some other threads on the same topic. I think it's really useful knowledge for new owners when it comes to maintenance.

However, my ear is poor😂 that I couldn't hear anything wrong in RICO4C's video.

Today, I took out the engine cover and listen to my engine sound closely which I never try it before. What I heard was a high-frequency "dadada" sound, kind like a sewing machine. It is not sharp but it is pretty load. I then touched the fuel injector, that round silver part if I am correct, and I found the vibration frequency matching the sewing sound I heard.
(By the way, don't do that unless you know your engine is cold, otherwise you are gonna BBQ your fingers🤪)
Another testing I did was revving up RPM a bit. As the RPM went up, the frequency of sewing-like sound got faster. When I released the paddle, the sound disappeared and came back again once the RPM settled at idle.
So, does that mean the sound I'm hearing is normal fuel injection noise? Also, I'd love to hear how you guys go about figuring out where different engine noises are coming from—any tips or tricks you use?

ciao Dracula, this is easy…..
one noise came from the rotor and being near as you did you can easily understand that came from there.
the other ( if it it that the noise) is on a side of the car. It is possible to hear it if you stay near the belt or better, removing the cover to see the status and again checking it after starting…..

And third, going to ANY car independent mechanic that understand what is a motor ……( the easiest one…)

Good to listen and learn the sounds any car makes. Direct injection gas motors are noisy especially at idle, with some similar sounds to a modern common rail diesel although the fuel pressures in the diesel are far higher. I wouldn’t over stress on your car it seems normal. I had a high pressure fuel pump replaced as it had an intermittent rattle sound that was getting louder and sounded different. The pump was replaced under warranty at the dealer and the mechanic said it was clearly different than another 4C they had in the shop (and the first time they had a bad pump in the shop). From inside the car there is a lot of noise from induction, turbo, tranny, exhaust, ac compressor, coins or a lose screw or dropped item on the floor of the car. Learn the sounds your car makes and note when they change volume or become irregular, or if there is something new - that’s when I would start investigating.🍀
