It’s about time for another decent drive. May 21 to the Rockley Pub via the less travelled scenic route.

It’s been a while since our last group drive. I just did a reconnaissance drive for an Alfa Club run I’m planning and thought, with a slight variation, this would be an ideal drive for the 4Cs. Basically heading towards our old haunts but this time going though Burraga on the way to lunch at Rockley….The road surface is absolutely first class. Just shows what can be done when when a solid foundation is prepared for the logging trucks that ply the roads during the week.
Dog Rocks Road has been completely patched too. It’s in much better condition than this time last year.
Easter School holidays, an Alfa Club drive and Mothers’ Day kind of makes me wary of doing this any earlier, though May 7 could be a date. May 21 is the Sunday following Mothers’Day.
Who’s up for a drive?
Same start location as last time, the cafe car park opposite Richmond RAAF base at 7:30 for an 8AM launch. First stop at Monkey Creek for those who only want to do a short morning run up the Bells Line (though you’ll miss the best part of the drive).

Thanks Ricky, see you early on Sunday fortnight. 👍👍
Eight 4Cs are going so far if @fas74c can confirm. Just hoping the weather gods look upon us favourably that weekend. It should be a sight. 👌😁 A large table at Rockley Pub has been booked for lunch. Pre-emptively…No @goldmax, we’re not eating the table, just sitting at it. 😉😁🙄

I’m 100% in Jim…flying solo.

8 on the run is a healthy contingent…but would be amazing to get to double digits.

For those on the fence, it’s a great run with great company….what could be better ?

Remember…these boots were made for walking !!

Don’t have a 4C anymore but totally agree, if the weather is anything like this week it will be sensational. Would love to join with my new ride but can’t do weekends anymore. Have fun and stay safe everyone.

Don’t know why you sold your baby, chimera but with a young family I can imagine. I had 20 years of weekend commitments with the kids doing little A’s, gymnastics competitions, swim meets and chess tournaments. Some great memories but thank goodness that’s all over.
I can’t say if we’ll ever get ten again but 8 is enough…Edit: Thanks for the good wishes for the drive.

Great news, Ant. See you guys in a fortnight.

I’ll do the usual recon before the drive.

The Monkey Creek Cafe owner rang me today to tell me she is closing the cafe. Today was the last day operating. A real pity because it was a lovely spot to stop. The impending reopening of the Zig Zag Railway has come too late to save the business. Such a shame. I’ve gotta search for another morning stop venue. I have a couple of places in mind but this weekend will be a bit chilly in the mountains to be out on the bike. If anyone has any ideas please share.
It’s sad to lose such an iconic car especially being the first owner. Have a great drive everyone!

The day was too good to waste. I did a recon of our route and found a venue for morning tea. Quiet, with ample parking. Roadworks are for the most part finished. Darling Causeway has been resurfaced in many parts but there’s a lot of loose gravel outside of the wheel tracks. There are still a few potholes but it’s now navigable.

I intended to return home via Edith Road and Jenolan Caves but the road into Jenolan closes at 4:30 to thru traffic. Guess who arrived at the checkpoint at 4:35 and got turned around? 🙄 If we go home that way we need to get there well before 4pm just to be certain of a thru run. It’s a lovely road when empty, as it was for me this evening. A pity as I had to double back (to Titania Rd) and the traffic leaving Jenolan was heavy and slow.

Edit: I had a look at Live Traffic and apparently the Jen Caves Rd at Five Miles is still permanently closed. I couldn’t have got through even if I reached the caves. Oh well….It looks like that idea is out for the time being but something to keep in mind for the future.

Photos of the moon rising taken from Jenolan Caves Road on the descent to Cox’s River. A magic piece of road. 👌

Almost a week out from our drive and the medium range weather forecast is looking passable. Over the mountains looks good, but the trip back into Sydney might be a little damp. It’ll be interesting to see how the forecast develops over the week.

The minimum temp is rising but the maximum is dropping. Warm weather for penguins. Temp forecast for Oberon.

Hi Jim, not sure if your stilling looking for a suggestion to replace the Monkey cafe, but I went with a few guys on bikes through McKanes Falls Rd through to Jenolan Caves Rd and stopped at a lovely place with an amazing view called the Hampton Halfway Hotel. You can head off of Jenolan Caves Rd to Duckmaloi Rd which is admittedly a little rough in places to Oberon. Not sure exactly if the route you had planned but the road that way were pretty good on the bike..

Hi Adam, Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve spoken to the people at the Victoria and Albert Guesthouse at Mt Victoria and they are opening the cafe early for us (9:15, so they said). Hopefully the fire will be lit. It was when I dropped in a couple of weeks ago. No view, but it was warm in front of the fire. They did SMS me a couple of days ago to confirm if we’ll be coming, so I assume it’ll be OK. If not, there’s a cafe over the road. For future reference, what time does the Halfway Hotel open? See you on Sunday, Cheers.👍
