Potential 4C owner

Hi all,

I’m thinking of getting a 4C. Pretty close to pulling the trigger on one. I missed a nice white one on Car and Bids which sold for $48Kish . Another white one showed up down in The SoCal area on autotrader , missed that one as well. Then it a grey one at a local MB dealer showed up but had a lot of stone chips.

Now my friend who works on Alfas has a red 2015 LE with about 12k miles. Unfortunately it’s a flooded car so it has a salvage title. The flooding must not have been major because all it needed was a new harness.

He also replaced the timing belt. Other than that the car is good. I know a salvage car would always be about 20% below a comparable car. But would it be worth the money to get it if it was offered at the $39k-40k range? I remember that the 100k mile 4C sold for about $34.5K so it seems that salvage and high miles car have some sort of a bottom at around the mid $30Ks

Would prefer a non-salvage car in CA, but this deal seems to be good. Any thoughts?

I'd be in the 30s. Salvaged come with stories. You may not care but the next owner will and it'll be hard to sell. If you intend to keep it, go for it. I'd consider 30s for one that was proven good to go and I was going to keep. Welcome to the addiction. Once you know, you know.

offer 30K and work up from there. See if he totalled it out and this is pure gravy.......

You seem pretty keen to purchase a 4C. Have you driven one yet? If not, then take the grey for a test drive.

If you are buying this as a keeper then the title brand may not matter. But life has a way of throwing wrenches into plans, and a mark on the title will make the car hard to sell. You will be at the mercy of whoever is in the market looking, should the need arise. So definitely take the low-ball approach when it comes to buying a car like that. You also don't know what troubles may lay in wait down the road for this kind of car, either.

I would also hate buying a vehicle like this from a friend - if something goes wrong, it will doubtless strain the friendship.

You have definitely experienced how waiting, when you've found the right 4C, can be a mistake - the good ones tend to go pretty fast. I'd suggest that you take your time to come across the one you want, but pounce as soon as you find it. It's entirely possible that you will need to widen your search area to score one, though. Many here have purchased theirs from 1/2 way across the country. Hence, driving one locally while you have the chance is recommended.

If I were you, I would stay away from a salvage titled 4C.

Many 4C buyers are quite particular, and when/if you have to sell it, it will be a major headache. Also, some insurance companies or banks (if you have to finance it), would not touch a salvage titled 4C. I would just spend additional money to buy a clean title, no story 4C.

I would suggest buying one in the spec you want, not the most affordable one closest to you…. and would warn against water damage. Even if everything seems fine, in a few months it could become a moist nightmare.
I looked forever for a Comp Red and Tobacco coupe. Other colors came up, some close by and really clean, but my mind was made up. Be patient.

I'm no expert, but I personally was really looking for a salvage title due to the fact that I know myself, every car I've ever purchased I've kept until the wheels fell off.. I've modded it to some extreme point.. I wanted to put a k-swap into a 4c.. then my spec came up I got it.. all. Except the color I wanted (I'm pissed at me)! Know yourself.. if you might sell definitely stay away from the salvage of your not worried about values and you want to drive the shit out of it, mod it.. consider all options.. I can tell you that I'm counting miles; and I think I'm losing the battle/value.. I can't stay away from this thing...

How long ago was the water damage? How many miles?

If it was like 3 years and 8k (of the 12k) miles ago I’d consider it. Otherwise I’d run.

Also, close to mid 30s for that IMHO. I wouldn’t pay 39-40.

What was the nature of the water damage? Flooded garage? How deep.? If it ran into a creek crossing I’d give it a miss.

Can you have the owner remove the passenger foot-plate? There’s a fuse box and relays under there and that’s where the damage is likely to start. Get some close-up photos or go and see for yourself (the better option).

Dont know about the extent of the damage, but when I drove the car, nothing seemed moist or smelled musty. I suspect it must have been partially submerged, excluding the dash because that looked fine.

The guy is totally honest as he has been in the Alfa business all his life and I’ve been his friend and customer since the 90s. He helped me build my Milano with a modified 156 GTA engine. But as with anything you buy from a friend, both sides have to accept the deal once it’s closed and not put a guilt trip on the other party in case something doesn’t work out.

Based on the feedback I’m getting here, my first choice is a clean title car. If I can get him to sell it for around the $34-37K range I may seriously consider. But as many have said, if I wanted to resell it would be a headache .

I can go do a detailed inspection if I’m really serious about buying his car. But I think i should be able to snag a deal in the next few weeks or months around the $40-50k range with a clean title.

The guy knows Alfa. Inspect ALL the electricals very closely. let the experts here, and your friend, basically give it the PPI. Many cars get this because they had water get in doruing a donpour with street flooding. If short lived and cleaned right out....totally different than a FL car flooded with seawater!!!!!!!!!

There’s a rebuilt title w/30k miles (rebuilt several years and 25k miles ago) on FB right now asking low 30s. I’d jump on it if you’re looking for a low entry price 4C.

Is a 45k mile clean-titled 4C priced in the low $40s reasonable? it’s the red one on Carvana.

Has some minor scratches and the usual dash delamination. I’m leaning towards possibly a white, 18k miles at a higher price.

The problem with paint issues is good quality paint work is usually very expensive. Once all is said and done the price gap between the cheap 4C and the nicer and more expensive 4C narrows…and I’d still lose out on the mileage.
I bought an Alfa 916 Spider a few years ago, knowing it needed paint doing. The quotes I got for doing a proper job were very high so I didn't bother, and I regretted not having just waited and paid more for a better car. When I bought my 939 Spider I paid premium price to get an immaculate one. So I probably paid £2k more than one which wasn't too bad, or £5k more than a high mileage, slightly rough one. And I am still really pleased that I did shell out the extra. As the strapline for a classic car dealer goes "you remember the quality long after you have forgotten the price".

This is so true!
Especially with a car as special as the 4C.
Obviously, everyone’s circumstances are different, but to me I’d rather have a more expensive car and be enjoying it than be forever searching and worrying about finding the best value one out there.

Here are some pics. Took a 7am flight down to LA, paid the money and was out in a matter of minutes. Just got home from Orange County back to the Bay Area. Car has the Quicksilver exhaust. Suspension is stiff, as expected. I think eventually I will get the Gabriella QV style wheels in 17/18 combo and a more compliant 215/45/17 and 245/*/18 tires. Weekend car only, no track, that’s the job of my Milano.
