Front plate legality NZ (and Aus?)

I've pm'd the couple of kiwis I know on here, but in case anyone else can help...
Prior to purchase we confirmed that the current NZ legislation states that adhesive plates are a legal alternative, and the dealer supplied one affixed at time of purchase.
The wife is now very unimpressed, as she got a ticket plus 25 demerits for the non compliant plate (and some extra for speeding...).
The officer insisted that LTSA supplies official adhesives (and suggested that only their adhesives are legal), but we've come up blank with them.
Are any of you any wiser?
Also you Aussies, NZ plates are made by Licensys who I think so some (all?) of yours - do they do adhesive over there?
Thanks!

Hi, I had a sticker originally, slightly smaller than the ACT slimline plate but otherwise using the same font... I didn't have any problem initially although the law clearly states that only officially-issued plates can be affixed. I then got two "friendly warnings", one in Canberra and one in Sydney, and decided that it wasn't worth the risk. So I now drive with the Government-issued front plate and I don't regret my decision. It certainly didn't make my 4c less fun to drive and that's what counts!
