Timing belt tensioner

I’ve been following the Alfaworks guide to TB/WP replacement and am stuck at getting the new tensioner to..tension I guess. Searched and read other people’s experiences and tried their methods, I’ve read this section of the FSM over and over as well so I must be missing something obvious here. I’m pushing the big tab towards the rear as illustrated by AW and can get it tight against the belt but no more. I can also just move the indicator up/down with my finger but not by applying force to the big tab. Am I just dumb?

I think I had more or less the same problem when I changed my belt in 2020. The solution was to perform both actions simultaneously. Push the tab (red arrow) AND move the indicator further than the small hole (approx the tip of the green arrow). There is a kind of "dead center" in the system. On your picture, the indicator is so "low" that you can't push it "up" with the tab. If the indicator is near the hole, pushing the tab becomes effective again.
