Hello everyone. My turn to ask for everyone's input/help (I hope "AlfaRomeoCare" is listening).

My car is a 2015 LE with 6,800 miles. It is never driven in the rain and is stored inside (I live in CA); has had all recommended services including bolt re-tightening (11/2019) and the timing belt and water pump were replaced this month (9/2021).

I was driving on a track going through the gears manually in Dynamic Mode when right after I shifted to 3rd I feel a pop and the transmission goes into neutral and a message appears on the instrument screen that reads something like "Dynamic Mode not Available At This Time." and the Check Engine Light comes on. I don't recall if the screen's message stated Race Mode was also not available. I coast off the track and try to put it into gear, which it won't. I shut off the engine, pull the key out and wait 15 seconds before I restart it. It goes into gear but will not allow me to access Dynamic or Race mode. I drive onto the track and manually and gently go through 1, 2 and 3 gears. I switched to Auto mode and it shifted for me as it is supposed to.

Back in the paddock we plug in the diagnostic code reader and Code P1CC0 appears with some note about a transmission pump. I call the US Alfa Romeo Customer Service number and they have no technical support or answers (very nice lady). I call the dealer, they do some checking in their own shop, and come back with the same general answer about a transmission pump, and need the car in the shop before they will engage the factory techs.
By the way, the car had not been washed in a very long time before I went to the track, so I am assuming the water issue mentioned in this thread is not a factor (naive of me?). I also drove it 30 miles home in traffic and it behaved fine, except the CEL is still on (never went off) and Dynamic and Race Modes are still not available.

Please let me know what you all think.

As a side note, the transmission switching itself into neutral is a bad default when you're on the gas hauling "you know what".
Did you check the oil level of transmission hydraulic pump or if there are any leaks around the area? Remember some owners had to top it off after some time.

Funny you mentioned this....
I did top off my fluid a few days ago. Noticed some strange tct shifting/feeling and primed a few times extra lately... This is the SECOND time i extra filled my tct reservoir in 20000km.
Please see my topic

No more extra priming and strange shifting/feeling and no leaks...(from what i can see)

Hi @davenorcal sorry to read about this issue you are having.
We have had some posts on here with some guys getting their hydraulic pump fluid very hot on track days in high ambient temperatures. So hot that they have heard hissing noises coming from the vent from the fluid boiling and have wondered if they have had a leak at the time.
The transmission cooler fitted to the NA models is really just to blow air over the outside of the transmission and is not as effective as a proper transmission cooler that many of our more track focused members have fitted to their 4C's.
Check around the transmission for signs of any fluid having been vented or having leaked out.
It may just be a case of needing to top up the fluid reservoir, but be careful to not overfill. There are threads on the forum on how to check it. The correct fluid type is described in the manual. Do not overfill - there has to be enough room for expansion when the fluid gets hot.
I would check this to eliminate one more thing from the list of possible suspects.
One clue that the transmission fluid level is low is when you hear the transmission pump cycling more often than you are used to.
Good luck hunting down the gremlins.
Cheers,
Alf.

Good point, Alf. I remember hearing that from a 4C at Wakefield a few years back.

True to the 4C’s modern race car experience, it even offers us a glimpse of the modern F1 nightmare of your otherwise perfectly good car losing drive mid-race and sitting there with a big N on the wheel while you try frantically to follow the various procedures being called out in your ear to coax it back into honoring your request for a gear.

No, I have not checked but will. It’s odd that a car optioned with a track package needs a transmission oil cooler. Thanks guys!
Track pack = lowered suspension, stiffer sway bars, stickier tyres/tires and maybe some tweaks to springs and shock-absorbers depending on the region.
Alfa thought the rest of the car was up to the job for most track days.
The only reason the NA cars get the air-scoop cooler and deflector plate is because of the extra weight for your additional crash protection gear.
Transmission coolers were never part of the Alfa OEM option list, at least not in my part of the world.
Cheers,
Alf.

The story I heard from ALFA was that the first US prototype cars did have some that had transmission glitches so the carbon fiber trans scoope was added. Turns out it wasn't an issue at all...all it needed was a trans flash which was done in 2017 during regular maintenance. I know of lots of 4Cs running stock and with tuned ECMs, etc. They work fine both on track and in daily driver use. People liked the looks of the scoop and so ALFA left it on....may have been something they couldn't remove at that point as the cars were already being shipped with them....and people wanted them. Frankly overheating generally isn't a problem with 4Cs on track. Lots of people running on very hot tracks and I have seen a lot more problems on other car brands going into limp mode due to overheating after 2-3 laps when really pushed.

Couldn't concur more. These cars are ridiculously capable in stock form of holding up all day on track, over and over. They really do put other sportscars to shame when it comes to this and I think it's the perfect example of the power of marketing in shaping "expert" reviews and commentary that anyone who talks about this car doesn't point that out, perhaps above all else, as something that Alfa did that very few manufacturers can do these days. It's as if the Germans have us brainwashed regarding their ĂĽber-capabilities, while the Japanese have managed to set our expectations for track durability so low that we have Stockholm syndrome and make all kinds of excuses for the car and why it needs the owner to do this and that and the other thing, for it to survive its track day.

Very good for DIY. Did you have to drill the CF tub for the fastener(s)? or was it already pre-drilled?
How much do you have to pay for the part? from dealer or direct from MOPAR?
TIA
No drilling or extra fastners. It attaches with the same fastners that hold the TCM. I got the part from the dealer, around $60 if I remember right

Update: Just had the program updated in the Transmission Control Module today at AutoNation Alfa Romeo Stevens Creek. The update was based on Service Bulletin #21-058-15 dated 11/5/15. Samer Khayati is the Service Manager and is one good guy. He listened to my story/concerns, didn’t try to sell me additional diagnostic time and got the job done in two hours. What an asset to Alfa Romeo.

From what I can tell so far the gear box is now smoother and it seems to function fine in all three modes. I drove it hard, but not nearly enough time on it yet. Time will tell, but I think I’m on the right path.

EDIT: The Stevens Creek dealer is in San Jose, California. As of Monday, 1/2/23 Berkeley Alfa Romeo is no longer an Alfa dealer.

2nd Update: I finally connected with Sarah @AlfaRomeoCares and we had a no-lag back and forth via email and phone about me having to pay $300 for a TCM re-flash by the dealer. The result is a check is on the way to me plus she threw in an oil change on the house. I wanted to post this to plug AlfaRomeoCares. It’s actually pretty cool the factory is paying attention and good things are coming from it. Thank you Sarah and AlfaRomeoCares!

Nice to get positive feedback for the factory assistance. I wish we had something similar on this side of the Pacific. Too small a market, I suspect.

I wonder what would happen if you called US customer support. I imagine if the issue is universal (mine might be a good example of this) the same thing can happen anywhere on the globe. Geography shouldn’t matter…maybe I’m being naive.
