My transmission just faulted for the 1st time. While driving, I changed to manual mode, as soon as I pressed the button, immediately the transmission w/ gear warning comes on and went into neutral (kind of dangerous as I was going on an incline and in middle lane). After got it over to the side, turning engine on/off few times, the check engine light always on and finally it let me go into gear. Right now check engine light is still on though .

Anyway to clear the check engine light, should I?
Is it recommended to ask dealer for the TCU flash CFC8TDW.01-00-UF14M080 (does all dealer have it)?
Bringing to dealer, any other recommendation?

If you have access to an OBDII reader that *can* read the transmission codes (vs. just the engine codes), pull the codes.

From others' experiences, check battery terminals for corrosion, have them check the gear selector panel harness plug and button assembly and see if you have the most updated TCM updated software (+/- patch).

Did you happen to get any other error messages on the display? Hill holder assist, ESC, ABS unavailable; transmission failure, check handbook? Braking system unavailable? Any oother dash lights displayed?

That's a good start.

Sorry, don't have an OBDII reader, and I check the battery terminal as mentioned by other before, looks clean.

I got the transmission failure message in the middle, with the little red gear on the bottom left when it happened. Happened a little quick sorry, didn't get all the info. Wasn't able to put in gear at all, after I turned the engine off and back o,n it only has the check engine light left but will not let me put in gear.

Thanks.

Brought into dealer today, dealer performed TCM and PCM update I was told. Right now it drives well in dynamic manual. Will keep posted if anything.

Thanks again.

just for the record, please state your model year and date of production if you have that information. :)

4000+ miles and still no issues at all (as I reported). We are assuming that the shield was put on to protect against water on the TCM plugs. I was thinking after looking at an older Corvette....they put a shield on that car to eliminate electronic noise to the radio caused by the ignition on the car. Perhaps the shield has something to do with that. My LE (Feb. 2015 build) doesn't have the shield but since I never run my car in the rain if possible I am not a good sample.

One thing hasn't been mentioned...which radio or radio delete do the various cars have. Mine is a Parrot, are some of the Parrot radio cars equipped with the shield? Also...for cars with the Alpine...do they have the shield or not. I am thinking that the shield was more for electronic noise suppression than water protection...but just guessing.

My LE is #498 US but as others have mentioned...the production wasn't necessarily in order. I am wondering if the shield was used on some of the LEs and if so starting at what production date.

Finally...if water intrusion was the issue...it seems the fix would be a very easy one for those who don't want to go through having to remove a body panel to install it and the dealer hassle. Just take some good Gorilla tape and run it on that body seam on the inside....won't show and will divert the water. Since it doesn't modify anything and is removable I don't see any reason not to do it. This makes more sense than waiting for something to fail and than having to deal with it when out in the middle of nowhere.

Well it's finally happened to me...

Drove to Abu Dhabi from Al Ain. Cruising at 160km/h. Stopped for fuel, and when I started the car again I got the flashing cog. No manual mode allowed, and only 1st, 3rd, and 5th available.

If i let her cool a bit (i.e. switched off), then I'd make it about 20km before the warning popped up again.

Spoke to the service centre. The guy seemed to have no idea of what i was talking about. Will have to take her in to Dubai to be checked.

Bummer! I am awaiting the result of the disassembly of the transmission in mine, so they can have a look at the clutches. It made the same thing, so I could only shift between 2, 4 & 6.

I should have it back next week and hope to get some info on what has been done to it...

I've put over 1600 miles on mine since the fix and zero issues. I'm no longer worried about it so everything my dealer did was recommended by Alfa so at least they know about the issue and it seems they fixed it
Glad it worked out. Any idea of what they did....flash the computer, parts, etc.

Wondering if once we vote and things change...if the poll can be changed. For instance....I haven't had any issues and voted that way. I still have no issues but wondering if I can change my vote if a problem pops up or vice versa?

Car is up and running again. They say it was just a faulty switch that prevented 2nd, 4th and 6th being selectable. Will have more detail when I pick the car up tomorrow.

Been very busy lately, but picked the car up on the 3rd. All seemed well until 80km out of Dubai. Was doing 140km/h when I lost all my gears. Revs shot into the red, and I got messages that all three driving modes were no longer available. Coasted to a stop, shut down and tried to restart. Car said she was in 6th, so no start. Tried to select neutral, but she kept giving me the finger, telling me that I could not make that selection. So, after about 20 mins I tried again. She selected neutral and i could start. Big surprise - only 1st, 3rd and 6th. Limped home, then limped back to the car (attempt at humor). Drove home and placed a less than polite call to the service centre.

They picked her up on a flatbed, and if I'm lucky I'll have her back next Saturday.

Apparently they have ordered a new transmission actuator.

Uhmff.

I just voted. I apologize for voting so late. Some of you will remember that my transmission failed in Sept 2015.

2015 LE, build date January 2015, no TCM shield. The transmission faulted to neutral and Transmission Fault symbol came on after about 8,000 miles. No other fault symbols. Transmission would not shift into gear until either I waited 5 minutes or lifted the battery negative cable to reset it. It would not allow manual to be selected until the car had been started about 4 times. It would happen only in Race or Dynamic /Manual. It would not fail in Natural/Manual or All Weather/Manual. The fix was to replace the complete transmission and TCM. The car has 13,000 miles now, and this problem has not recurred.

Just voted as well.

My LE (produced sept. 2014 as I recall) started having the transmission issues sometime in August. About 8,400 miles or so on the car.

Driving along in dynamic manual, and it would spontaneously drop to neutral and give the gear not available warning. Usually cycling the key a few times, it would let you drive off in automatic. Could drive it all day in auto mode without a problem.

Finally got it in for service. New (updated) shift actuator and a software update (thanks racer z) and so far it seems fine, shifts seem a bit crisper too, but have only driven it 120 miles or so since I got it back.

Due to impending inclement weather in the north east I may not get anymore miles on it until spring :crying:

I have a full scanner and run it once I get my Alfa 4C.
